About the Author

Temple Grandin has a Ph.D. in animal science from the University of Illinois, and has designed one third of all the livestock-handling facilities in the United States, and many in other countries. She is currently an associate professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University and a frequent lecturer at autism meetings throughout the country. She lives in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Before I read this book, all I knew of autism was the stereotypical idea of a kid huddled in a corner, mute and closed out from the world. But I learned that there are many forms of autism, some quite high-functioning, most unrecognizable from my assumptions. Temple Grandin describes her own experiences with autism, and how she channeled an obsessive interest and turned it into a career. Grandin used her empathetic ability to understand animals along with solid drawing skills to design more humane livestock-handling systems. Her work was innovative and award-winning. This is a fascinating book on many levels.

This was an absolutely amazing book. I would say it's one of the best I've ever read. I could have done without the details of the inhumane treatment in some slaughterhouses, but it's amazing that a lady with autism has helped changed the meat industry. To be honest, I wasn't as interested in the part about her work as much as I was in the accounts of how she thinks, social interactions, etc.
