Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Tom's a normal seventh-grader, negotiating a slightly prickly stage in his long friendship with Jeff...The arrival of new girl Jessica Feeney, however, changes everything; Jessica, who is attending a local hospital for treatment, has been badly burned by a fire, and her terrible disfigurement shocks the class into confusion.

This isn't the usual book about adjustment to difference; instead, Abbott brilliantly explores the kids' struggle to manage the intrusion of abnormality in their lives...this is a thoughtful exploration of a brief interlude's lasting impact.

Review:

"This novel may be brief, but it leaves a big impact." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Review:

"It's a beautiful story, a sad story, brilliantly written, a story you'll never forget." Newbery Honor winner Patricia Reilly Giff

Synopsis:

Tom and his classmates learn that Jessica, who has been badly burned, will be attending their school while getting medical treatments. Despite her startling appearance, Tom slowly develops a friendship with Jessica that changes his life.

The perfect teens and tweens read to get them to see the impact of bullying and ways we can be more accepting of others who are different. Within this story a man reflects on how his whole outlook on life was affected after a three week encounter with a burn victim when he was in seventh grade. Honest dialogue, nothing is sugar coated here, which is what kids crave, honesty and how to handle real life, difficult situations while "saving" face among their peers. A great book to spark discussions whether at the dinner table or within the classroom, a must read for kids of all ages!
