Publisher Comments:

Ga'Hoole is victorious, but far from the great tree, in the bitter ashes of defeat under a full moon, Nyroc is born. And he will be bred to monstrous evil.

Kludd is dead. Nyra, his mate, is determined that her hatchling, Nyroc, will fulfill his father's destiny: the vicious oppression of all the owl kingdoms. But Nyroc is a poor student of evil. A light grows in his heart, fed by scraps of forbidden legend and strange news of a place where goodness and nobility reign. He must summon all his courage to defy his destiny — and the embodiment of evil that is his mother.

The book i'm reviewing is The Hatchling by Kathryn Lasky. The story takes place in the owl kingdoms. The main characters in this book are Dustytuff, Nyroc, Nyra, Wortmore, Uglamore, Ottulissa, Stryker and, Gwyndor. In the beggining of the story Nyroc hatches from his egg. He goes through the ceremonies that all owls are supposed to go trough. Nyroc runs away with Dustytuf to find truth. He starts to molt when they are running. They are captured and taken back to the Pure Ones. There is an evil ceremony that Nyroc is supposed to kill his best friend. Nyroc refuses to kill Dustytuff, so Nyra, Nyroc's mother and the leader of the Pure Ones kills Dustytuff. Nyroc decides he can't be around so much evil and he runs away again. On his journey he is haunted by the scroom of his dead father. He then realizes that if he wants to go farther he will have to get his feathers back. He stops running and waits for his new feathers to grow in. He then meets a rabbit who is a web reader.
I think the message the author is trying to convey is that even if you are surrounded by evil it is stil possible to do good. She is trying to tell peoplethat bdoing good is a choice that we all have. The theme of this book is you should do what think is right and neccesary, no matter what obstacles are in ypur way.
"I defy you. I HAVE FREE WILL." is a quote Nyroc says. This quote is important because it will change his life forever. "She just knew she had to go to Beyod the Beyond." This is a quote said by Ottulissa. She is an owl from the great Ga'Hoole tree. This quote is important because it tells you that there is something important there.
What I liked best about the book is the part where Nyroc got rid of everything he had. The thing about the book i didn't like was there wasn't enough action. This book will have lasting value to some people because it highlights the fight between good and evil in everyday life and how you can overcome it. The author dos accomplish her goal of saying that good overcomes evil. I would reccomend the book to people who can relate to animals, people who like adventure and to people who have read the first six books.
