Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Overpopulation, disease, and ecological disaster were edging humanity toward extinction. Hope arrived in the haan, an alien race that promised us a future.

And what they wanted in exchange seemed so harmless...

Sam Shao has found out too much about the haan, by accident. All humans have to get along with them—we owe them our lives—and Sam even counts a haan among her best friends. But the more she learns, the less she trusts them

It doesnt help that the building of new haan colonies seems to be coinciding with a rash of missing persons cases. Sam and her hacker friends are determined to reveal the truth about the haan, before its too late. The aliens are still promising salvation, and they seem set to deliver, but with things already spinning out of control Sam is confronted with a possibility no one wants to admit—that what salvation means to humankind and what it means to the haan may be two horribly different things.

Synopsis:

All hell is breaking loose in the edge-of-your-seat follow-up to Havoc and Perdition from New York Times bestselling author Ann Aguirre…

The prison ship Perdition has become a post-battle charnel house with only a handful of Dreds soldiers still standing and now being hunted by Silences trained tongueless assassins. Forging an uneasy alliance with mercenary commander Vost—who is their only chance at escape—the Dread Queen will do whatever it takes to end her life sentence on Perdition and keep the survivors alive long enough to cobble together a transport capable of getting them off station.

If Dred and her crew can win the deadly game of cat and mouse, the payoff is not only life but freedom—a prize sweeter than their wildest dreams. Yet the sadistic Silence would rather destroy Perdition than let a single soul slip from her grasp…

Synopsis:

The Conglomerates most dangerous convicts have made the prison ship Perdition their home. And they will defend it…

Perdition is under siege. Mercenaries have boarded the station with orders to take control of the facility—and execute the prisoners. Their commander is offering full pardons to the first five inmates willing to help the mercs complete their mission.

Dresdemona “Dred” Devos hasnt survived hard time just to surrender to the Conglomerates armored thugs. Leading a ragtag army of inmates, Dred and her champion, Jael, wage a bloody guerilla war of chaos and carnage against impossible odds. But no matter how dire the outlook, the Dread Queen never backs down…

About the Author

In her life, Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a voice actress, and savior of stray kittens, not necessarily in that order. She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in sunny Mexico with her husband and two adorable children who sometimes do as they are told.

I just finished re-reading this series for the 3rd time. What I enjoy immensely is the fast paced adventure, the friendship between the main character and an "alien", and the transformation that the character makes throughout the series.

What I am less enthused about is that some of the writing is less good than I like. But, I am picky like that.

If you can handle the writing (and it isn't that bad) and you enjoy this first book you will want to read the whole series.

When the passenger ship Sirantha Jax was jumping through Grimspace crashed, 82 people died including her lover and co-pilot. The Corp says she did it on purpose, and begin a fierce interrogation program. So when a man walks into her cell and says he can get her out from under their thumb, Jax says yes. He wants her to help form a rebellion and train jumpers who who aren't part of the Corp. But with bounty hunters and the Corp hot on their trail, the rag-tag crew she's joined are going to have a rough ride. Jax doesn't mind. She likes danger.

This first book in the series isn't as smooth as the later books, but is still very enjoyable. I don't read a lot of first-person books, and Jax's sharp narration with heavy use of sentence fragments took getting use to. I don't recall it being as obvious in the later books, so perhaps the author realized it was a bit too much.

The characters are the strong point of this series, each one wonderfully complex, morally grey and most with unpleasant backgrounds of one sort or another. Jax and the mechanic, Dina, feel a little underdeveloped in this book, but both ladies improve over time.

The one thing that I was getting rather frustrated with was that the author kept setting up to explain some more of the hows and whys of grimspace jumping, but kept veering off and not delivering the info.

Katie Walker, January 13, 2011 (view all comments by Katie Walker)
Grimspace is a witty SciFi novel which is a cross between Babylon 5 and Star Wars.

The main character Sirantha Jax is a carrier of a rare gene allows her to pilot spaceships through the space between worlds, grimspace. After an accident leaves her the sole survivor of a horrific crash, she is ruthlessly interrogated by her employer, who want to blame the incident on her. A mysterious band of fighters breaks her out of her prison and offers her chance to redeem herself by starting an underground movement against her employer. Reluctantly, Jax joins the band and havoc insues.

The novel has wonderful pace and humor. I was a little worried that Aguirre wouldn't be able to keep these qualities through the whole book, but I was delightfully surprised again and again when she did.
