This is the third book in the Kate Daniels series, and although you could read it as a stand-alone, you would not get nearly the same level of enjoyment.
Kate is another fictional butt-kicking heroine, but in a very unique world. She resides in Atlanta in an alternate world where magic and technology affect the city, and it's inhabitants, in waves. When the tech is up, lights, phones, and cars work, buildings stay up, and guns fire. When the magic is up, none of the above function, and all sorts of mystical and magical creatures gain the upper hand.
In this installment, we learn more about Kate's unusual and impressive heritage, as she is forced to infiltrate a gladiator-style fighting competition, in order to protect her friends. In doing so, she exposes herself to the people she has been working so hard to hide from all her life... that is until she is capable of killing her mortal enemy: Roland. More of the were-world is explained, and Kate develops new relationships and others are strengthened. Now that the first two books have given us a strong setting, this novel delves more into Kate's own history and development. Yes, there is a romance thread, but it's more tantalizing than anything and only enhances the story.
The author has matured with each novel, and this one flows much better than the previous two. Each scene is interesting, unusual and vivid. The characters are evolving in realistic ways, while still maintaining their individuality. Ms Andrews obviously has more ideas than she knows what to do with, so there are multiple plot threads, but each is tidied up by the end, with just enough dangling to make you passionately anticipate the next installment.
