Publisher Comments:

At the age of eight, the author began a three-year odyssey through a series of orphan asylums and foster homes, punctuated by episodes of living in the streets—a journey through a world of hostile strangers, abusive adults, and suspicious children.

Burch was left at an orphanage and never stayed at any one foster home long enough to make any friends. This is the story of how he grew up and gained the courage to reach out for love.

This book will make you cry your eyes out. This book makes you realize how blessed you are compared to other people in the world that don't have as much as you do. What Jennings Burch went through was a very sad thing that nobody would wish on their child. Jennings had to face death, getting beaten, and staying at many foster homes and different people's houses. This book is a must read. Even though through all the bad things Jennings went through, it made him so much stronger. Strong enough not to walk down the wrong path like 2 of his brothers did and do drugs. Jennings had a stuffed dog that he kept with him all the time. That stuffed dog was like Jennings little piece of hope that kept him going. It is a must read for all ages. I guarentee it will make you see your life in a different way.

When I was in junior high school, I read they Cage the Animals at Night for the first time. I am now 35, and my tattered, yet cherished copy sits in my office at work so that when I need a reality check, it is always there to provide. The story of Jennings Michael Birch isn't a pleasant one. It is gut-wrenching at times, but the endurance of innocence is paramount. Written by the boy who experienced it when he became a man and a father himself, this book hinges on the ideas of family, love, sacrifice, abuse, friendship, longing, loss, dispair, and hope. Jennings and his forever friend Doggie are always with me, to remind me of where I came from, how far I have come, and what can be accomplished with love.

I really liked this book. It was like one page after another and I couldn't stop reading it. I never wanted to put it down because I wanted to see what would happen next. There was a lot to think about and guess were Jennings was going to go or were everyone else was going to go. Overall I really liked the book. It was too bad that Jennings didn't know what happend to Sal, and Stacy.
