About the Author

Mary Ann Lamanna received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame in 1977 and began a long teaching career in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in that year. In addition to this textbook, her publications include articles on the family, reproductive issues, and women and the law, as well as a book on Emile Durkheim and the family. Teaching areas include family; gender; law and policy; population; and social psychology.Agnes Riedmann is a professor at California State University, Stanislaus. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Nebraska. Her publications include the study on fertility in Africa. Current research projects include sibling relationships and the effects of welfare changes on families.
