Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

Anne Shirley is adopted by brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Under their care, Anne blossoms from an unwanted, unloved orphan girl into a kind, intelligent, and lovely woman (though not without getting into many very funny scrapes, particularly as a young girl! One memorable "scrape" is getting stuck in the roof of a henhouse...) Montgomery had a talent for bringing her characters and even Prince Edward Island to life, and though the first Anne book was published 100 years ago, the series still seems "fresh" today. This set includes: Anne of Green Gables (my personal favorite), Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. Definitely one of my very favorite series, which I have read at least ten times.

FYI-- Book 1, Anne of Green Gables, is Canada's best-selling novel of all time, and has sold millions of copies in more than 36 languages, including Swedish, French, Polish, Japanese, Icelandic, Arabic and Hebrew. It has been adapted for the stage, screen and even into an anime cartoon! To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the publication of the first Anne book, PEI is hosting a year-long celebration (http://www.anne2008.com).

I read this series as a child and re-read it as an adult. It is a charming account of a little red headed orphan named Anne Shirley, and her adventures and journey into adulthood. It teaches children to use their imagination and reminds adults that they still have one.
