About the Author

Rick Bass is the author of sixteen books, including Colter: The True Story of the Best Dog I Ever Had. He lives in the Yaak Valley of Montana with his wife and two daughters.Peter Orner was born in Chicago and spent time in Africa with a Harvard program as a student. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated from Northwestern in 1990. He holds both an MFA from the University of Iowa and a degree in law. He served as a public defender in Massachusetts and currently teaches law in Prague. He will return to the States in July of 2000 to teach in the creative writing program at Miami University of Ohio. Orner's stories have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, North American Review, Epoch, Denver Quarterly, Michigan Quarterly Review, and other periodicals.Barbara Kingsolver who was a former science journalist has emerged as one of the leading voices in contemporary American fiction. Her novels include The Bean Trees, Animal Dreams (winner of the Edward Abbey Ecofiction Award), Pigs in Heaven (winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction), The Poisonwood Bible (a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize and an Oprah's Book Club selection), and Prodigal Summer. Kingsolver lives in Tucson, Arizona with her husband and two daughters.

I always read "The Best American Short Stories" but the book for 2001, the year in which Barbara Kingsolver was editor, the collection really stands out.
