Hooray Paradeby Barbara M. Joosse
Synopses & Reviews
Little Liam is snuggled in his toasty bed when his slumber is broken by a crack! snap! ROAWR! outside in the woods. Papa is away, and Mama is sleeping soundly. And as everyone knows, Mama is delicious to forest things. It’s up to Liam to protect her, but what can he possibly do against the forest’s wild and dangerous creatures? He’s just a little boy, after all.
Barbara Joosse, author of Please Is a Good Word to Say, teams up with Jan Jutte, one of the Netherlands’ preeminent picture-book artists, to create this highly original picture book that shows that what it really takes to defeat ferocious bears is—a big imagination!
Listen to Barbara Joosse read ROAWR! here.
"Joosse (Lovabye Dragon) celebrates imagination and a grandmother's creativity in this carefree story loosely based on her children's song, 'Hip Hooray Parade.' Framed as a guessing game, the book has a sense of playfulness that derives from freewheeling verse, rhyme and repetition, and nonsense words. Much to the delight of her granddaughter, the contents of Gramma's basket are gradually revealed when she hangs up a sheet and uses props to create shadows that hint at the identity of various animals ('Gallump gallump./ Can you guess what's coming up?'). A page flip shows the entire animal in full color and high spirits: an elephant with 'a pink and purple stripy trunk' balances on a ball; rhinoceri tethered to orange balloons float in the air; and a kangaroo and her joey are 'a-rooting and a-tooting' their blue kazoos. Yum (Mom, It's My First Day of Kindergarten!) uses watercolors and linoleum block prints to create spare yet festive illustrations, which pop from the white backdrop. A jubilant parade led by Gramma and granddaughter caps off this rousing and affectionate romp. Ages 3 — 5. Illustrator's agent: Sean McCarthy, Sheldon Fogelman Agency. Someone's coming to play with you.
Can you guess who?
In this wonderful read-aloud
for very young children,
Gramma comes to visit
and brings a surprise . . . or two
. . . or three.
And a lot of the fun is guessing
which surprise is next!
Part thoughtful play,
part playful imagination,
this tongue tickling tale
of funny animals and loving family
will entertain and involve children
with each turn of the page!
Going to Gramma?s takes plenty of preparation. Granddaughter packs her overnighty trunk and says goodbye to Mom, Dad, little fish and baby in the bed. She can?t wait to see her silly millie gramma! Together at last, the two spend a day full of dancing, painting each other and partying with a razzle and a dazzle before, finally, resting together in a ricky rocky swing. What a day!
Barbara Joosse?s spirited text combined with Jan Jutte?s lively illustrations create this delightful story. Full of engaging, bouncy language that zips right along, this is an original picture book that captures the loving relationship between a young-hearted gramma and her enthusiastic granddaughter.
