Unlike any other fantasy novel I've ever read (and I've read fantasy with steeply decreasing enthusiasm since I left my teenage years...), Grossman's novel immerses the reader into richly imagined magical kingdoms (and purgatories), repeatedly upsets one's expectations about plot fulfillment, and invests the fantasy genre with a new metaphor: magicians are hackers, exploiting the "code" that gods used to fashion the multiverse. Great prose style, brilliant surprises, and fully realized characters make for an immensely satisfying read.

The Magician King was my absolute favorite book of 2011!!I haven't been more anxious for the next book in a series since the Harry Potter series.

I loved this book! Narnia for adults, and an interesting meditation on happiness (and the lack thereof)
