Hand this book to any Yoko-hater and watch as the corners of their mouth tremble, resisting a disarmed smile. This work (originally published in 1970) is probably, properly, "Fluxist," though it takes that project even further from the gallery than any "happening" could. Ono's instructions for the reader are sometimes funny and philosophical ("Let people copy or photograph your paintings. Destroy the originals"), sometimes seemingly impossible ("Let everybody in the city think of the word 'yes' at the same time for 30 seconds. Do it often"), and always fascinating. Yoko's been an art-world hero for a long time, but it needn't end there! I'm convinced the world would be a better place if everyone read Grapefruit.

"A dream you dream alone may be a dream, but a dream two people dream together is a reality."

"This is the greatest book I've ever burned." — John

Synopsis:

Originally published in 1970, "Grapefruit" remains one of the icons of a generation, with a mixture of poetic verse, drawings, mock questionnaires, and more. Line drawings.

About the Author

Yoko Ono was born in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan. She was married to John Lennon from 1969 until his death in 1980. Together, the two formed the Plastic Ono Band and spent much of their time on peace and humanitarian efforts. Ono continues her artistic endeavors as a writer, painter, and musician. She lives in New York City. Best known as singer-songwriter for the legendary Beatles, John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England. In 1969, Lennon married Yoko Ono and the two formed the Plastic Ono Band. Lennon was killed by a deranged fan outside his apartment building in New York on December 8, 1980.

I bought this book a couple of years ago, much to the discontent to my boyfriend. Of course he had the idea most people have about Yoko Ono, but without reading and understanding her intricate writings and emotive drawings, most opinions are completely unfounded. Yoko Ono's drawings and writings are an important part of feminist culture, music history and generally, just interesting to look at.
This book is timeless, and I have it sitting on my mantle. People that come over always pick it up, and seem to say the same thing every time..."I had no idea she was actually an artist, or that she could write."
Yoko Ono is definitely much more than that sentence...
