Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

An ideal reference for both medical students and prospective parents, The Pregnant Body Book looks at the nature of human pregnancy, including how it's changed through evolution, and explores the anatomy and physiology of both the reproductive systems.

Examining the development of the baby in the womb and the parallel changes in the mother's body and structured to follow the process week by week, The Pregnant Body Book follows every anatomical and physiological change and tracks it in unprecedented detail. Specially commissioned 3D artworks, illustrations, scans, and photography show exactly how a baby changes and grows during pregnancy, and how the female body adapts to carry it.

Includes interactive DVD featuring cutting edge animations.

Review:

"This book, a revisiting of the universal human experiences of sex, pregnancy, and birth, stands out for its comprehensive pictorial representations and down-to-earth explanations. DK's typically picture-heavy approach turns out to be perfect for a study of this subject. The result is akin to a museum between the covers. From electron micrographs to ultrasounds to MRIs, this book seeks to help any of us (from medi-cal students to curious pregnant couples) understand what goes on inside the body at any point of preg-nancy and beyond. When organized by week, information about both fetus development and the mother's changing body becomes completely understandable. Male and female reproductive anatomy, a cursory genetics lesson, and a chapter on disorders round out the discussion. Key developments by month will help students commit important facts to memory. Glad to see that DK also finally did a book and CD-DVD ROM on this subject as well. At the same time wish they covered this in their previous book and CD-DVD ROM . It also goes for their competitors as well. Instead of doing three separate (Body, 2007, Brain, `09, Complete Human Body, `10) books and CDs-DVDs ROMs on all of this. As for me went ahead, got this book because I found its way easier to keep track of and etc along those then the other way around. As for the separate books I donated them to one of the local hospitals in my area medical library.
