Book News Annotation:

Based on extensive fieldwork at the site, this is a major work, which presents detailed description and data of the geography of the area, the amphibians and reptiles that live there, and their habitat, food, calls, and habits. Initial chapters describe the physical environment, vegetation, and provide an overview of the herpetological assemblage, their abundance and mass, seasonal patterns, life in the environment, reproduction, biogeography, and the impact of various types of human activity. Accounts of 152 species fill the remainder of the volume, with lengthy treatment for each of identification, characteristics, occurrence, reproduction, advertisement call, tadpoles, and food. Color plates of all the species and the vegetation of the area are included. Duellman is emeritus curator of the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center of the U. of Kansas, where he is also emeritus professor to the department of ecology and evolutionary biology.
