Book News Annotation:

In this memoir aimed at physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals, Atkins (law and society, U. of Calgary, Canada) relates how at the age of 21, she began suffering from a mysterious illness which left her paralyzed for months at a time and required intubation and life support. She eventually became a quadriplegic and since diagnostic tests returned inconclusive results, her doctors decided that her symptoms were psychosomatic, while both she and her physicians thought she was dying, yet she suffered for 20 years without diagnosis or effective treatment. She was finally diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and details her healing process and how she was able to walk again. In the process, she challenges evidence-based practice and other medical norms. The book concludes with a clinical commentary by a clinician who reflects on the meanings and lessons of knowing how patients think, the goal of the series.
