Publisher Comments:

Everyone has a secret. But Lucys is bigger and dirtier than most. Its one shes been hiding for years—that her moms out-of-control hoarding has turned their lives into a world of garbage and shame. Shes managed to keep her home life hidden from her best friend and her crush, knowing theyd be disgusted by the truth. So, when her mom dies suddenly in their home, Lucy hesitates to call 911 because revealing their way of life would make her future unbearable—and she begins her two-day plan to set her life right.
With details that are as fascinating as they are disturbing, C. J. Omololu weaves an hour-by-hour account of Lucys desperate attempt at normalcy. Her fear and isolation are palpable as readers are pulled down a path from which there is no return, and the impact of hoarding on one teens life will have readers completely hooked.

Review:

"Debut author Omololu gives a disturbing appraisal of how a mother's obsessive hoarding affects her teenage daughter in this frank novel that spans a tense 24-hour period. The grief 16-year-old Lucy experiences when her mother dies suddenly at home is overshadowed by her dread that paramedics and the general public will learn her family's secret: they've been living amid piles of filth due to her mother's refusal to ever throw anything away. ('The last repairman didn't get past the front hallway before realizing the place was too full of crap to even get near the hot water heater,' Lucy remembers.) Lucy's decision to clean up the mess before notifying authorities may seem ill-founded and unbelievable to some, but readers will feel compassion for her as she recalls how her mother's compulsive behavior has cost her friendships and a normal social life, as well as posing health risks. Tension intensifies as the clean-up process proves even more overwhelming than Lucy imagined. Her determination to erase the past may lead to debates about whether Lucy's motives are rooted in selfishness, shame, or love. Ages 12 — up." Most people seek out help when they discover the death of a loved one, but Lucy is forced into solitude. Her mother is…or was… a hoarder who has made Lucy’s life unbearable and their home practically unlivable. Lucy has mere hours to do what she’s always done –take on the responsibility and protect the family’s secret from the world. Only now she has to do it alone…and with her mother’s dead body in the house. Cynthia Omololu brings us a courageous main character who has for years strived to portray a sense of normalcy to the outside world when her home life is total chaos. Tension mounts as the clock counts down the hours and Lucy is constantly under threat of discovery. But how can one girl tidy up decades of disorder? DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS descriptions of Lucy’s household are vividly detailed and haunting. While reading, I wanted to reach into the pages and find some way to help Lucy succeed in her difficult, no near impossible, mission.
