Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

An invisible, uncrossable physical barrier encloses the Unified States. The Line is the part of the border that lopped off part of the country, dooming the inhabitants to an unknown fate when the enemy used a banned weapon. It's said that bizarre creatures and superhumans live on the other side, in Away. Nobody except tough old Ms. Moore would ever live next to the Line.

Nobody but Rachel and her mother, who went to live there after Rachela's dad died in the last war. Itas a safe, quiet life. Until Rachel finds a mysterious recorded message that can only have come from Away. The voice is asking for help.

Who sent the message? Why is her mother so protective? And to what lengths is Rachel willing to go in order to do what she thinks is right?

Review:

"In this atmospheric dystopian story, Rachel and her mother live with her mother's chilly and withdrawn employer, Ms. Moore, at the edge of an invisible barrier — the Line, part of the oppressive government's National Border Defense System — which encloses the Unified States. Rachel is homeschooled by her mother (a device Hall uses to give readers history lessons), and spends time tending orchids in Ms. Moore's greenhouse. But she is deeply curious about Away, the land beyond the Line, and about the Others, who were displaced after the Line was erected. When Rachel discovers a recording device and a voice on the tape asks for help, she decides to approach the Line, leading to an encounter that will disclose her family history. Debut author Hall's clear, controlled prose builds burgeoning tension ('Perhaps someone with less imagination, or more friends, could have resisted the pull of something so forbidden... but Rachel was not that person') while unraveling carefully conceived plot twists, which address themes of totalitarianism, nuclear war, and xenophobia. Dimensional characters and compelling questions unveiled at the dangling finish will have readers awaiting the next installment. Ages 12 — up." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"The Line took me 'away' in one page-turning gulp. Seamless, smooth, and compelling — I can't wait for the next installment. This is a new author to keep an eye on." Mary E. Pearson, author of The Adoration of Jenna Fox

Synopsis:

In this compelling debut, Hall writes a futuristic urban novel about the lines one girl must cross, and what lengths she is willing to go in order to do what she thinks is right.

I was disappointed with this book. The information regarding the Line, the Others, the dystopian society in general, was all dispensed slowly and in a "history lesson" format. The text felt stilted at times and rather juvenile for a YA book (one thing that bugged me was the author's continued use of the word "giggle" to describe the mother's laugh, which didn't seem to fit her characterization). There was a lot of potential with the plot line, but I felt it was poorly executed, and the dangling ending felt like a cop-out. Would not recommend.
