Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With 6 starred reviews, 8 best of the year lists, and over 20 state award nominations, everyone is raving about Mirror Mirror!

"Remarkable."—The Washington Post

"This mind-bending poetry is accompanied by Masse's equally intelligent, equally amusing art."—Time Out New York for Kids

Whats brewing when two favorites—poetry and fairy tales—are turned (literally) on their heads? Its a revolutionary recipe: an infectious new genre of poetry and a lovably modern take on classic stories.

First, read the poems forward (how old-fashioned!), then reverse the lines and read again to give familiar tales, from Sleeping Beauty to that Charming Prince, a delicious new spin. Witty, irreverent, and warm, this gorgeously illustrated and utterly unique offering holds a mirror up to language and fairy tales, and renews the fun and magic of both.

Review:

"Singer and Masse's companion to Mirror Mirror (a PW Best Book in 2010) is just as inspired as its predecessor. Iconic fairy tale characters speak through poems that can be read backward and forward, resulting in drastically different meanings. Familiar rivals duke it out: 'I can't be/ beat./ I've got rabbit feet to/ take me to the finish line,' says the overconfident hare. 'Take me to the finish line!/ I've got rabbit feet to/ beat./ I can't be/ the smallest bit distracted,' maintains the tortoise. Elsewhere, the line 'Behold his glorious majesty' conveys both vanity and incredulity in Singer's take on the Emperor's New Clothes. Cobalts, reds, and golds dominate Masse's textured acrylics, contributing suitably regal visuals for Singer's dizzyingly clever wordplay. Ages 6 — up. Agent: Brenda Bowen, Sanford J. Greenburger Associates. Illustrator's agent: Lori Nowicki, Painted Words." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Synopsis:

Now one of Booklist's 30 Best Books of the Year!

"Genius!" – Wired.com

“Marilyn Singer's verse in Follow Follow practically dances down each page .  . . the effect is miraculous and pithy.” – The Wall Street Journal

Once upon a time, Mirror Mirror, a brilliant book of fairy tale themed reversos–a poetic form in which the poem is presented forward and then backward–became a smashing success. Now a second book is here with more witty double takes on well-loved fairy tales such as Thumbelina and The Little Mermaid.

Read these clever poems from top to bottom and they mean one thing. Then reverse the lines and read from bottom to top and they mean something else–it is almost like magic!

A celebration of sight, sound, and story, this book is a marvel to read again and again.

Synopsis:

Poems perfect for a year in the life - a dog's life, that is!

Day in, day out, our dogs are there for it all. But they see holidays quite differently than we do - Halloween, for example, is when you can't tell the real cats from the costumes! And, of course, dogs have special days of their own, like Hole Digging Day or the dreaded Visit to the Vet Day. Perfect for dog lovers of all ages, this clever book by one of the leading children's poets celebrates all those days and more, looking at a whole year in the life of our canine companions.
