Encyclopedia of Plague and Pestilence: From Ancient Times to the Present, Third Edition

by George Childs Kohn

Encyclopedia of Plague and Pestilence: From Ancient Times to the Present, Third Edition Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Tracing the history of infectious diseases from the Philistine plague of 11th century BCE to recent SARS and avian flu scares. Encyclopedia of Plague and Pestilence. Third Edition is a comprehensive A-to-Z reference offering international coverage of this timely and fascinating subject. This updated volume provides concise descriptions of more than 700 epidemics, listed alphabetically by location of the outbreak. Each detailed entry includes when and where a particular epidemic began, how and why it happened, whom it affected, how it spread and ran its course, and its outcome and significance. Black-and-white photographs have been added throughout.

Book News Annotation:

The Plague of Justinian swept through the entire Byzantine Empire in the sixth century, and along with the corruption of the court came the corruption of eventually 300,000 of bodies in the streets of Constantinople. Spanish influenza killed more than 21 million people in 1917-1918. Quick thinking about quarantines and the relative isolation of affected villages contributed greatly to the eradication of Ebola in Gabon in 2002. Each of these 720 accounts of epidemics, including new materials on anthrax, asian flu, HIV/AIDS, mad cow disease, SARS, tuberculosis and the West Nile virus contains a lesson about how even diseases that are not always fatal can decimate whole nations. The editors and contributors describe locations, symptoms, probable causes, and duration of each disease and provide maps, photographs and a substantial bibliography. Particularly telling are their descriptions of what such epidemics did to host societies and economies. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
