Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

What is at stake in compromising the Enlightenment ideals of a liberal education with new educational policies engendered by a neo-liberalized, global marketplace? Richly grounding his arguments in the social philosophy of European and American intellectuals, Raphael Sassower explores Western culture's long-standing ambivalence toward the life of the mind.

Book News Annotation:

Sassower (philosophy, U. of Colorado) puts his overall complaint this way: "In the name of accessibility we have sacrificed every myth and ideal we have ever had in regard to what higher education should be about, namely, the development and refinement of enlightened citizens who will more fully participate in the affairs of the state that their less-educated predecessors." Beginning with an overview of the economic pressures on higher education, Sassower proceeds to try and convince legislators, administrators, and professors that the university should be an intellectual sanctuary. One of Sassower's more interesting framings of this well-worn complaint is education's need for "waste" (usually known as "play" and "exploration") as necessary for intellectual growth.
