The American Merchant Seaman's Manual was a must have book when I was a cadet and student at Maine Maritime Academy. This book contains most of what you will need to know before you head out to sea. There is a wealth of nautical information, the author clearly knew who his audience would be because it is actually an interesting read.

I still have a copy of this book sitting at home even though I am no longer sailing. I would have to reccomend this to anyone who wants to learn about life and work at sea. If you are considering a career in the maritime field- this book will be something you are expected to read at least once.
