Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Updated maps, new hikes, new photos, and useful backpacking options make Paul Gerald's authoritative guide to Portland's best day hikes even more useful than before.

Whether travelers want a convenient city bus ride to the flat and fascinating Washington Park, a bumpy drive to Lookout Mountain, or the thigh-burning experience that are Kings and Elk Mountains, this guide outlines what to bring, how to get to the trailhead, where to go on the trail, and what to look for while hiking.

Paul Gerald profiles 60 select trails that provide everything there is to enjoy around Portland — mountain views, forest solitude, picturesque streams, strenuous workouts, casual strolls, fascinating history, fields of flowers, awesome waterfalls, and ocean beaches.

Book News Annotation:

Gerald's writing style is highly engaging, full of personal observations and tips about each part of each hike, so that hikers get a sense of the terrain, what lies before them, and where the best scenery, best picnic spot, best waterfall, or best camping spot are found. Each of the 60 hikes includes a map, a table listing key information, directions, and things to do nearby, in addition to the detailed guide to the hike itself. Hikes are included for the city of Portland. Includes many b&w photos and a second table of contents organizing the hikes by type, such as 1-3 miles, good for runners, and hiking with children. My husband and I are just starting to take up hiking. This book was recommended to us by a local hiking company. So far it has been worth every penny! We have done several of the listed hikes and the information was right on. They give you everything from how to get there to the little details on where to start your hike. I can't wait to do all 60 hikes!

I decided last spring that I wanted to revisit my love of hiking. It had been nearly 8 years since I'd ventured out on a trail--primarily because I moved from the Southern Appalachians to the West Coast--I didn't understand the layering (I'd only known "hot") of clothes, the weather--it all seemed foreign, so I stayed away. Eventually it got to me though, and I wanted to be out there with all the other Oregonians enjoying the beauty of this state.

I ran across this book in a local outdoor store and picked it up. To my delight, this book was very well organized and well written. In addition to directions, you get an elevation map, an idea of how many folks you'll see on the trail, the shape of the trail, and the general level of fitness you'll need to be at before trying the trail. This was just the book to get me moving again--and so I began hiking. I made a commitment to hike 3 trails from the book each week, never duplicating--for the entire summer. I met that goal, and I learned so much more about the area of the world I live in. I appreciate the detail the author used, and the candor as well. It's clear Mr. Gerald really loves Oregon, and he loves hiking.

I've glanced at other "60 hikes within 60 miles of" books and not one of them has as much information (well thought out, organized information) as our Portland book.

I hope this book gets you back on the trails as it did me--see you there!
