About the Author
Margaret Kemarre was born at Harts Range, to the north-east of Alice Springs, in 1938, and lived there until she was about eleven or twelve. She then spent a few years each at the Catholic mission at Arltunga and at Mt Riddock, before moving back to the Catholic mission which had by then been re-located to Santa Teresa (Ltyentye Apurte). She lived for a number of years in the girls' dormitory there under the charge of the nuns, before marrying in 1961. She has lived mostly in Alice Springs since the mid-seventies. She is very active in community work, and has worked over many years at the Institute for Aboriginal Development where she has taught Arrernte language to adults and has been a major contributor to the Arandic Languages Dictionaries Program.
