Scintillating New Mystery Features Corruption, Murder and Personal Vengeance Detective uncovers strange connections to his past within the dark underworld of Boston It's 1964 and racial hostility burns across the country. In Boston, an arson epidemic hits the slums of Roxbury, a once Jewish district now a land of urban decay. Completely disregarded by the local press and civil leaders, the strange fires have no known origin. Their ambiguity only further fuels the flame of curiosity in Detective Jody Brae, once an orphan in the Roxbury Home for Stray Boys. With political and law officials holding a broken moral compass, crime is seen as unavoidable and low on the list of priorities. Political degeneracy is just one strand in this tightly woven web of secrets. The plot thickens as the mysterious events link with the obtrusive nature of Brae's childhood. He quickly finds himself compromised by the twists and turns of the case and the satisfaction of retribution. Wedged between personal honor and professional integrity, it's a race against time for the valiant detective as he struggles to save his past, his job, and the love of his life. Jonathan Michael Cullen creatively navigates the reader through the dark Boston streets for each missing piece of the mystery. The brutality of the underworld mixed with a flicker of romance will propel both men and women to sit on the edge of their seats. The Ranks of Jody Brae is as blissfully puzzling as it is engaging; a perfect mix for a suspenseful narrative.

I actually found this book at a resort in Vermont. I don't usually read crime novels (although I did read a lot of Partricia Cornwell and Sue Grafton in college) but I was intrigued by the the cover. Basically it's about a detective who investigates an arson epidemic and finds out who his parents were (he was an orphan). The writing was intense and the story was amazing. I love finding little gems like this by accident!

Jonathan Cullen is a better story teller than a writer. While his writting is good enough to get the story out -- and a great story it is -- it is unlikely he will ever be a literary great, just solid. I really liked this story, I like mysteries, I love Boston as a setting and I am a fan of the sixties and the various movements of the time. I would really recommend this book for that reason. There are some nice complexities and I believe the characters while a bit shallow have enough appeal to keep the story moving and draw the reader in.
