A Rush of Wings

by Adrian Phoenix

A Rush of Wings Cover

Staff Pick

Rush of Wings is new author Adrian Phoenix’s unique take on the vampire legend. If you like your stories dark and suspenseful, this debut novel fits the bill. It is definitely not the usual urban fantasy romance. At first, you may think you stumbled into a Laurell K. Hamilton novel, but keep reading: the characters, suspense, and romance are nicely woven together, with little of Hamilton’s hyper-eroticism and none of the heavy breathing found in so many wannabe entries in this genre.

Publisher Comments:

His name is Dante.

Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination.

His past is a mystery.

F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own.

His future is chaos.

What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer — and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man — who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire — in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny....

Review:

"Set in the brooding New Orleans area long established as the best location for all things vampiric, Phoenix's lively debut has it all: 'Rogue [FBI] agents, Bureau-ordered hits, mad-scientist experiments in psychopathology, vampires and fallen angels and a slicing-dicing serial killer.' Smart, sexy FBI Special Agent Heather Wallace has been trying to catch the Cross-Country Killer for three years when the trail leads to New Orleans and Club Hell, where Dante Prejean performs with the Inferno, an industrial/goth rock band. Dante is a Cajun and a born vampire whose memories of his terrible past have been erased, leaving him vulnerable to the psychopathic killer, E, who knows all that Dante has forgotten. As E begins targeting Dante's loved ones, Heather must swallow her skepticism and work with Dante's vampiric friends and family to save him. Phoenix alternates romantic homages to gothdom and steamy blood-drinking threesomes with enough terse, fast-paced thriller scenes to satisfy even the most jaded fan." Review:

"If you read only one debut novel this season, make it this one." Kristine Kathryn Rusch

Review:

"A Rush of Wings is a dark, rich, sensual treat...Adrian Phoenix uses a perfect blend of suspense, romance, and lyrical prose to keep readers up until late, late at night turning the pages." Jenna Black, author of Secrets in the Shadows

Review:

"A female FBI agent hunts a serial killer sending messages to a gorgeous bisexual rocker who's a vampirish 'nightkind.' Movie Pitch: Interview With the Vampire meets The Manchurian Candidate. Lowdown: Hard-charging action sequences, steamy sex scenes, and a surprising government conspiracy makes this debut, the first in a series, engrossingly fun.
