The author examines arguments and debates about computing as a theoretical, engineering, and scientific discipline, emphasizing the origins and context of those debates, a broad perspective of the field, and different uses of terminology. She includes information technology, information systems, scientific computing, and computer science, as well as computer engineering, and presents views on computing as an academic discipline through opinion pieces and academic articles from academics, practitioners, and educators. She focuses on the logico-mathematical, engineering, and scientific traditions of computing and discusses it as a formal, theoretical discipline, beginning with its origins in mathematical logic, the formal verification debate, and modern views of the role of theory in computing; engineering debates from technical innovations in the 1600s, to the conception of the modern technological paradigm of computing in the 1940s, to the early 2000s discussions that legitimized software engineering as part of the discipline; the emerging view of computing as a science, including early naming debates about the ter“computer scienc” different views of computing as a science and famous characterizations of the field, the experimental computer science debate, and natural computing and the algorithmization of sciences; and how computing's disciplinary debates have changed over time.
