Lila's House: A Study of Male Prostitution in Latin America presents insight into male prostitution in San Jose, Costa Rica. This study focuses on a very specific sexual culture within the realm of male prostitution: the young men of a lower-middle-class brothel catering to pederasts — men attracted to boys or young men. You will learn about the culture of juvenile prostitution and learn from the immediate intervention program that was implemented. Twenty-five young men between the ages of 13 and 27 were interviewed for this study. They share with you their views on:
-- sexual intitiation
-- sexual definition
-- sexual orientation
-- love
-- drug use
-- prostitution
-- family relationships
-- relationships with men and women
The young men interviewed in Lila's House are in serious danger of being exposed to the AIDS virus and of becoming addicted, if they are not already, to cocaine, crack, or alcohol. Those conducting the study initiated a campaign to supply condoms and raise the young men's awareness about AIDS and drugs and began an immediate support program. The project resulted in the establishment, in June 1997, of an alternative home for juvenile prostitutes, which offers various opportunities for education and work.

Brandon Reich, January 20, 2007 (view all comments by Brandon Reich)
An honest, wrenching expose, this book describes in detail the many aspects of male prostitution in an city in Costa Rica. On an issue about which many may take a fairly black and white stand, the book calls upon the reader to work past those initial beliefs and take a hard look at the lives of all the people participating in male prostitution: the brothel house owner, prostitutes, ?johns,? family members of prostitutes and ?johns,? and the greater community. The book demands such an honest and complete viewing of the prostitutes? world, that it would be difficult for a reader not to engage with the book and develop compassion for the young men prostituting themselves.

As well, the author treats the prostitutes with a great deal of compassion. He explores and examines their sexuality, both on and off the job, and, in the end, allows them to own their own sexuality, without twisting it around so that it fits into their ?johns?? sexualities or into our greater perception of sexuality. This respect was, perhaps, what led the prostitutes to share deeply with the author. The depths of the prostitute lives and the complexities of their communities, sexualities, and families are truly astounding and well explored in this book.
