Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A Life in Medicine collects stories, poems, and essays by and for those in the healing profession who are struggling to keep up with the science while staying true to the humanitarian goals at the heart of their work.

Described as "an admirably complete look at the best recent writing on medicine" by the Detroit Free Press, the book includes well-known authors such as William Carlos Williams, Wendell Berry, Anne Fadiman, Lorrie Moore, and Walt Whitman, as well as writing from doctors, nurses, practitioners, and patients. Provocative and moving contributions address issues of life and death, cancer and AIDS, seizures and psychosis, advocacy and anatomy, from both ends of the stethoscope.

Review:

"An anthology of lasting appeal to those interested in medicine, well-written literature, and a sympathetic understanding of human life." Booklist

Review:

"All of the selections reflect a concern for the human aspects of medicine and espouse the rights of the patient over the rigidity of the medical establishment." Library Journal

Review:

"Stories, essays and poems by wonderful writers...consider[ing] the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by patients and those who care for them." Chicago Tribune

Review:

"Clinical errors, cultural clashes...[and] reflections on clinical encounters...[from] voices relevant to medicine and how it is practiced." New England Journal of Medicine

Theresa Mau, November 8, 2007 (view all comments by Theresa Mau)
It is impossible to summarize this anthology; filled with so much passion, desperation, and hope, A Life in Medicine paints all the ugliness and beauty there could be in a health care provider's lifetime. Ultimately, it asks us, "Can the sickness begin during a treatment?" As cruel as how some of the short stories scar our thinking, at the same time, the anthology appeals to the strength and maintenance of our own rules in life.
