In this groundbreaking and meticulously field-tested guide, the rich variety of Sierra life-trees, wildflowers, ferns, fungi, lichens, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, and insects-comes alive. Both written and illustrated by John Nuir Laws, THE LAWS FIELD GUIDE TO THE SIERRA NEVADA includes more than 1,700 species, descriptions of behavior, adaptations, and interactions between species, and species and topics not found in most guides, including aquatic life, spiders and webs, plankton, plant galls, bark beetle galleries, animal tracks and evidence, seasonal star charts, weather patterns, and cloud formations.

When hiking in the Sierra Nevada one wants to keep the pack as light as possible. However, this book is worth its weight since it will enhance your trip in every way.
Even if you thought you were reasonably familiar with Sierra plants, birds and animals, you will find yourself reaching for this book to help you identify what you see. The illustrations by the author are delightful and very accurate with extra text info to guide you when species closely resemble each other. I took this book on three trips this last summer and found it much more helpful than any other bird book I have used because of the site specific orientation. The riches of the Sierras unfold like the trail ahead.
