Publisher Comments:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) now says that as many as one in every eight adults and one in every four households has been victimized by identity thieves in the past five years. To make matters even worse, if you end up a victim of identity theft, it can take years to clean up the mess. The FTC defines identity theft as stealing personal information such as your name, credit card number, driver's license number, or other personal identifying information to commit fraud. The most common identity thefts occur when thieves use your name to apply for services, for credit cards or loans, to buy merchandise or lease equipment such as cars or apartments, and obtain medical care. They can assume your complete identity and live and work under your name, and even commit serious crimes. A primary goal of hackers and online crooks is to find, uncover, and abuse your personal information, anything that clearly identifies you, such as your name, address, social security number, birth date, family members names or friends names. Used in combination with other private information, like a bank or credit card account number, your stolen information can be used by an identity thief to open a new credit line, access your bank accounts or even apply for official documents like a driver's license or passport. The results for you can be devastating, reaching into every transaction you attempt until you clear your name and credit. Due to bad credit reports, victims of identity theft are often rejected for loan applications, credit of any kind, job opportunities, and housing. Your credit can be ruined overnight. You can even be arrested for crimes you didn't commit. To avoid being a victim of identity theft, your first rule is to get the knowledge you need to protect yourself before it happens. The good news is that the chances of online identity theft can be greatly reduced and mostly eliminated by taking the simple, free suggestions as outlined in this new up-to-the-minute book. You will find valuable expertise to evaluate and determine your, your family's, and your business's risks. After evaluating the risks, you are provided a detailed plan so that you can take action for prevention now. We have also outlined a step-by-step program detailing what you can do if you think, or know, that your identity has been stolen. In addition, there are numerous forms and letters that can be used as a template to contact credit agencies, government agencies, credit card companies, banks, and anyone else involved.

When a friend of mine had their identity stolen recently, it was horrible to watch. I knew I had to be more careful with my personal information and how I used it online, and “The Online Identity Theft Prevention Kit” taught me to do just that. This book helps you to understand the many forms of identity theft, and how you can plug up information leaks – before it’s too late.

The book takes a holistic and practical view of online identity theft, not only looking at how one protects themselves but also the reasons behind identity theft. The explanation of the value of my identity to thieves in chapter two ("Why would anyone want my identity, anyway?") was instrumental to my understanding of why even I'm at risk for theft. I also found chapter four ("99 Tips for Protection") to be really useful - I changed all of my passwords as soon as I read it! There were also helpful tips towards the end of the book, with practical step-by-step instructions and resource for recognizing identity theft and recovering your identity in chapter six ("Help! My Identity's Been Stolen!") and the appendices.

"The Online Identity Theft Protection Kit" is an essential read for anyone living any part of their life online. This kit will show you the way to safety - before it's too late.

I’m going to admit it: I’ve had my identity stolen. It wasn’t an extreme case, and it got resolved within a few weeks without any lasting damage, but the experience made me wonder: How can I protect myself better in the future? I found the answer in The Online Identity Theft Prevention Kit: Stop Scammers, Hackers, and Identity Thieves from Ruining Your Life.

The authors lay their work out in an easy to understand, logical fashion. They start with the how and why, then segue into prevention methods before tackling the bigger issue of repairing identity theft damage. One particularly interesting section on living anonymously explains how “regular” people, should they choose, are legally entitled to change their identities for any given reason—though not, as the authors notes, “with the intent to defraud someone.”

The book combines real-life content with a mixture of the authors’ personal experiences, drawing readers into a world at once recognizable and ugly. The authors reminds us, in a somewhat ominous way, that no one is safe. As with disease, our best protection is prevention. Even if you choose not to read this book, you should check out the section on how to minimize your risk.

With social media skyrocketing as it is, the idea that online identity theft could expand with it is also very real. Don’t wait until after you’re a target to learn from this book.

The Online Identity Theft Prevention Kit doesn't promise that your identity will never be stolen. Instead, it shows you how to make yourself an unattractive victim. Identity thieves are looking to take the easy road. If you throw some obstacles in their way, such as hard-to-crack passwords, anti-virus software and using only encrypted sites when making online purchases, they will likely decide that you are more trouble than you are worth and go elsewhere for their victims. This "Kit" is packed with specific strategies for accomplishing that.

This book also contains information on obtaining and making sense of your credit report, the pros and cons of identity theft protection plans and, most intriguingly, a whole chapter on how to live anonymously.

If, despite all your preventative measures, your identity does get stolen, this book gives you practical, step-by-step instructions for handling the situation, including form letters that can be sent to collection agencies, credit card companies and credit report bureaus, explaining your situation.

Anyone who uses the internet is vulnerable to identity theft. While reading a book like this is unsettling, it is also, unfortunately, necessary.
