Treating ADHD and Comorbid Disorders: Psychosocial and Psychopharmacological Interventions Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

For child psychologists and psychiatrists, social workers, pediatricians, school psychologists, graduate students, and residents, Pliska (child and adolescent psychiatry, U. of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio) draws on his experiences in outpatient and residential treatment settings to detail how to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and coexisting conditions. He provides case studies of comorbid disorders such as oppositional and defiant disorders, impulsive aggression, bipolar and depressive disorders, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and how they present in individuals with ADHD. Pharmacological and psychosocial interventions are discussed, as are treating children of different ages, using multiple medications, assessment and diagnosis, and collaborating with parents and other caregivers. Experienced child psychiatrist Steven Pliszka offers straightforward guidance on how to avoid common diagnostic errors, develop an individualized medication regimen, minimize health risks and side effects, collaborate successfully with parents, and tailor psychosocial treatments to each family's needs.
