Your Dog Is Your Mirror: The Emotional Capacity of Our Dogs and Ourselves Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

In Your Dog Is Your Mirror, dog trainer Kevin Behan proposes a radical new model for understanding canine behavior: a dogs behavior and emotion, indeed its very cognition, are driven by our emotion. The dog doesnt respond to what the owner thinks, says, or does; it responds to what the owner feels. And in this way, dogs can actually put people back in touch with their own emotions. Behan demonstrates that dogs and humans are connected more profoundly than has ever been imagined — by heart — and that this approach to dog cognition can help us understand many of dogs most inscrutable behaviors. This groundbreaking, provocative book opens the door to a whole new understanding between species, and perhaps a whole new understanding of ourselves.

Synopsis:

Even those dog lovers who feel they understand their pets better than anyone are sometimes bewildered by a mysterious behavior or response. This, asserts Kevin Behan, is because our dog's actions and attitudes are driven not by what we say or do but by what we feel. Two provocative conclusions follow from Behans argument: Because of unresolved emotions in our past, our dog may well know us better than we know ourselves. And because dogs "know us by heart," they can help us connect with and heal our buried issues. Based on dogs evolving as cooperative group members, Behan's approach offers practical ways to decode and change behaviors — and profound ways to learn from the mirror our dogs provide.

About the Author

Kevin Behan learned the dominance theory of dog training from his pioneering father, John Behan. He evolved his alternative approach after training and rehabilitating thousands of dogs. The founder of the Canine Arts kennel, he lives in southern Vermont.
