Book News Annotation:

Editor Pitt presents this collection on the topic of computational awareness, beginning with an introduction reviewing definitions of awareness in both humans and natural or artificial systems, the history of imagination of artificial intelligence, and proposing three different interpretations of the phras“computer after m” Contributors then address self-organizing systems, social awareness, self-healing programming, and emergent awareness in a discussion of ever-improving computational power (a succession of computers after one another). The second part interpret“after ” in the context of the potential for self-aware computers to turn against humans, discussing safeguards, monitoring, and goal programming to avoid such problems. The final portion considers the phrase as computers seeking a sense of self, building on the issues of the prior section by discussing reflective systems, internal modeling, and the specific issues of autonomous weapons systems and learning machines.
