Publisher Comments:

A New Edition and Translation of Le phénomène humain by Sarah Appleton-Weber, with a Foreword by Brian Swimme. The Human Phenomenon by the priest, paleontologist, and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is his book of the Earth, a discovery and an epic journey to open the way out for humanity in a time of world conflict and to release the spirit of the Earth. As Virgil led Dante, so Teilhard guides his reader back in space–time to experience the birth of our planet as it emprisons the human future in its globe and motion, then forward, through the emergence of life, the birth of thought and socialization, and the unique mode of human unfolding as humanity covers the whole planet in an entirely new membrane, the Noosphere.

Book News Annotation:

This is a paperbound reprint of a 1999 book about which Book News wrote: Chardin (1881-1955) was a Jesuit priest, paleontologist, anthropologist, theologian, and geologist who wrote about everything from Christian mysticism to ecology. This book explores the birth of our planet, through the emergence of life, the birth of thought and socialization, and the unique ways in which humanity interacts with this creation on a planetary scale. Editor-translator, Appleton-Weber, provides an introduction reviewing Chardin's works and thoughts, but primarily discusses the need for a new English translation due to the fundamental errors in previous editions. Synopsis:

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a priest, paleontologist and geologist whose highly original publication, LE PHENOMENE HUMAIN, attracted world-wide attention when it was first published. He wrote of the beginnings of our planet, the emergence of life, the birth of thought and the development of socialization in order to give humankind the inner vision necessary to thrive in an expanding universe. The original translation into English contained many fundamental mistakes clouding our understanding of Teilhard de Chardin's vision. Sarah Appleton-Weber has based her new translation, which is endorsed by the Teilhard de Chardin Foundation (Paris), on her careful comparison of the four versions of the French text. Poet and scholar Appleton-Weber, who has closely studied Teilhard's essays, letters, and other writing, gives a consistent and coherent voice to this translation of Teilhard's book.
