Publisher Comments:

The OpenBook Series highlights Ooligan Press's commitment to transparency on our road toward sustainable publishing. We believe that disclosing the impacts of the choices we make will not only help us avoid unintentional greenwashing, but also serve to educate those who are unfamiliar with the choices available to printers and publishers. Efforts to produce this series as sustainably as possible focus on paper and ink sources, design strategies, efficient and safe manufacturing methods, innovative printing technologies, supporting local and regional companies, and corporate responsibility of our contractors. All titles in the OpenBook series will have the OpenBook logo on the front cover and a corresponding OpenBook Environmental Audit inside, which includes a calculated paper impact from the Environmental Defense Fund.

About the Author

The first edition of Classroom Publishing was written in 1992 by Laurie King and Dennis Stovall. In 2001 Dennis Stovall founded Ooligan Press, the premier student-run publishing house in the United States, and he relied on the concepts of Classroom Publishing when designing the curriculum and structure of the master's in publishing program at Portland State University. As a project from the classroom, the second edition was written and produced by the students of Ooligan Press.

Classroom Publishing is an invaluable resource for teachers who wish to give their students fun, challenging, and ultimately meaningful work. The book teaches students how their own ideas can be refined, improved upon, and finally published. Witnessing the gestation and birth of an idea can be incredibly empowering for the student who may have previously felt disenfranchised. This exhaustively researched and well-written book lays the groundwork for a new mode teaching that allows students to engage each other through participation in the publishing process. The book contains everything an instructor needs to teach students about publishing, from acquisitions to marketing and promotion. Also included are moving stories featuring real-world examples of classroom publishing and the impact it has had on the lives of students. This book is highly recommended for K-12 teachers and students.

Classroom Publishing is a great source for elementary and high school instructors who wish to use publishing in the classroom, in order to encourage literacy, learning, enthusiasm, and confidence. If student work is published, it is shared outside the classroom and sometimes even makes its way into the community; thus it gives students a sense of pride and participation. The book describes the different steps in publishing, interviews instructors, and supplies many concrete examples from schools and organizations nationwide. The original edition was published in 1992, and this second edition is entirely revised and updated, so that it is now appropriate for the digital world. Students and instructors will be inspired to write and publish their work and will have a great learning experience in the process.

This book is a wonderful resource for teachers K-12 (and I suspect it might even help some high education teachers). It gives an overview of the different areas of publishing, and it gives real life examples of how teachers have incorporated publishing in their classrooms. This book would also be helpful for those who oversee student publications like yearbooks, school newspapers, or literary magazines. After reading this book, I suspect that using publishing in the classroom would also be helpful in school subjects apart from language arts or English. This book also has a helpful website with some lesson plans and a blog that continues on some of the topics addressed in the book. www.ooliganpress.pdx.edu/cp

To sum it up, I'm really excited about this book!I think this is something that every teacher should add to their library!
