Steel frameworks are common structural systems, relying on conventional analysis that assumes "a fully rigid or ideally pinned connection"--an assumption that deviates from reality as stated in the preface: "...all beam-to column connections used in current practice possess some stiffness and fall between the two extreme cases of fully rigid and ideally pinned." Research and knowledge has expanded during the past 20 years, but practical application of semi-rigid connections (or partially restrained construction, or PR connection) has had to wait for maturation and availability of data, software, and specifications. The time has come for practical implementation, given the publication of the 2005 AISC specifications as well as Eurocode 3. This handbook introduces those specifications, presents test data in tabular form, provides models and case studies, and includes recent developments of steel-concrete composite connections. The three editors are affiliated as follows: Wai-Fah Chen (engineering, U. of Hawaii, and Purdue U.); and Norimitsu Kishi and Masato Komuro (both: civil engineering, Muroran Institute of Technology-Japan). This Handbook presents a simple and comprehensive introduction that will help design practitioners implement 2005 AISC specifications as well as Eurocode 3 into engineering practice. Beginning with a discussion of the new specifications and classifications of these connections, the authors go on to show, on the basis of the collected connections database, practical mathematical models for computer implementation, and provide case studies on these frames including composite construction. With the help of the user-friendly list of collected data in tabular form with illustrative figures, information on semi-rigid connections is now available in a single publication and may ultimately result in its wide-spread usage among practitioners.
