Review-A-Day"Aside from presenting [Joelle] Jones as a talent to watch for, 12 Reasons isn't a groundbreaking work. It's a good story, one that will be familiar to anyone who has endured the slings and arrows of romance, yet distinctive enough to fall for the characters and their plight. In the end we may wonder if Evan and Gwen can (or even should) make their relationship work — and the fact that we care is the greatest testament to the strength of this book." Chris Bolton, Powells.com (read the entire Powells.com review) Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:A romance novel told in twelve individual vignettes, 12 Reasons Why I Love Her explores the relationship of young couple Gwen and Evan, traversing the ups and downs of their romantic life together. Told out of chronological order, these specific slices of love focus on all the things that make two people care for one another, be it something small like telling a joke or larger aspects of life, like the dreams that drive us or the secrets we keep. When put together, the pieces make a whole in the same way two lovers join as one. Crafted by Jamie S. Rich & newcomer JoĆ«lle Jones, this beautiful and lyrical work is a unique experiment in graphic storytelling, combining the things we see with the words we say to give us a glimpse of everything we feel. Review:"Gwen and Evan meet at a sold-out premiere of an indie art film. Their romance starts out disastrously, but both feel a spark of something they're unwilling to let go of. So far the synopsis is no different from dozens of other romantic comedies, but instead of following the formula, Rich and Jones tell the story of the romance in 12 out-of-order snapshots. Some focus on the pivotal moments of their relationship — the first date, the first argument — others on the quiet connections that keep them together. The art's bold lines always draw attention to the emotions, setting the characters sometimes in detailed New York scenery, sometimes against stark black and white backgrounds. Some chapters use softer, full-page drawings to stop time entirely and focus on Gwen as seen through Evan's eyes. The nonlinear structure is diverting, but it imposes a sentimental nostalgia onto a story without enough meat to support it. Before the moments of real drama can be fully explored, the story jumps to a completely different time period. This graphic novel is a sweet little nugget of romance, but there isn't quite enough development for it to be satisfying." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.) Review:"Rich and Jones perfectly encapsulate the frustrations of young adult romance, the paradoxical blending of needs and desires with the profound inability to ever really become one with each other." Alan David Doane, Comic Book Galaxy Review:"The banter between the pair is entertaining and perfect, but there's also an awkwardness in the script at times that really drives home a genuine sound and brings credibility to the characters....[Jones's] sketchy, flowing style is thoroughly pleasing to the eye, and the expressiveness of her characters really helps Rich to tell the story. (Grade: 9/10)" Don MacPherson, Eye on Comics Synopsis:A romance novel told in twelve individual vignettes, 12 Reasons explores the relationship of young couple Gwen and Evan, and the ups and downs of their relationship.
