Publisher Comments:

Cassandra Mortmain is 17. Her journal describes the weird and wonderful world in which she lives: housed in a crumbling castle, with her writer father (who is "blocked"), her beautiful older sister Rose, her brainy younger brother and her unconventional artist stepmother, Topaz. The sudden arrival of two handsome American strangers is the catalyst for this touching coming-of-age tale, which sees Cassandra taking her first forays in womanhood not without her fair share of grief and giggles.

Synopsis:

I write this sitting in the kitchen sink is the first line of a novel about love, sibling rivalry, and a bohemian existence in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Cassandra Mortmain's journal records her fadingly glamorous stepmother, her beautiful, wistful older sister, and the man to whom they owe both their isolation and poverty--Father. A minor cause celebre, he has since suffered from writer's block and is determined to drag his family down with him. But if the iron has entered Father's soul, it hasn't penetrated Cassandra's...

Listen to this Book! So I read an article about Britain's 100 favorite Books, and this book was on it. Dodie Smith also wrote 101 Dalmatian's as well as many plays and novels. The 1st line is one of the best "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink". I have a toddler so I opted for the CD version of this book, what a lucky choice. Now that I have finished I am sad I feel like I have lost a friend. Some people have labelled this young adult fiction, it is nothing of the sort. Yes the narrator is 17, but the writing and the ideas exposed are eternal. The premiss of the book is that Cassandra the narrator and Rose her older and lovelier red headed sister as well as their father, brother and artistic step mother live in a rented castle. The father was once an acclaimed writer for his book Jacob Wrestling but has not written a word since and the family has fallen into poverty especially after the butter knife incident. Though life is hard they have each other, Stephen the son of their former cook who now works about the house and loves Cassandra, the enlightened vicar and the sweet librarian and of course the castle. Rose the older sister takes the poverty the hardest and one night wishes upon an angel/devil in the castle and low and behold the young American owner of the estate and the castle along with his brother arrive stuck in the mud in front of their castle. And now you are off and running on a great story. This book is written through Cassandra's writing events down in her journal so it is perfect to be read to you since it feels ever so personal as if you are her journal and she is telling you her darkest thoughts and insights about the world. A really wonderful piece of literature. I am now getting all of her books. I found that the author Dodie Smith wrote this while in the US and missing Britain. And she stated that of all her books this was her favorite. It is now one of mine. Highly recommend.
