Michael H. Hanson weaves words into both poems and prose in this collection, discussing such topics as a small boy afraid because his mom isn't home when he returns from school, creating the perfect poem, an older brother with a penchant to pick on the younger sibling, and all the comfortable, ordinary things that make up our lives.
From the book:
When I Was Small
I remember when I was small, the first time I took our dog Rusty, a full-grown reddish-brown purebred German Dachshund (that we kids had found abandoned in the neighborhood one night), on a walk, on a metal linked leash, outside of our apartment building in the Perlacher Forest Army Housing Project in Munich, Germany. Then Rusty heard another dog in the distance, and barked, and struggled against me to chase after it, and won, pulling the leash out of my weak little hands. And my eldest siblings went out and found him. And I was not allowed to walk him again.
