Urashima and the Kingdom Beneath the Sea (Kodansha Children's Classics)

by Shiro Kasamatsu

Urashima and the Kingdom Beneath the Sea (Kodansha Children's Classics) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The brave young fisherman who visits the Kingdom Beneath the Sea in this magical legend is sometimes thought of as Japan's own Rip Van Winkle. The glowing colors and exotic patterns of Shiro Kasamatsu's illustrations, originally painted half a century ago, lend a unique air of enchantment to a classic folk tale, retold in lilting verse by writer, translator and lyricist Ralph F. McCarthy.

Review:

"Will captivate readers. Retold in droll, boisterous verse, this tale features many of the common themes running through Western fairytales, yet retains a uniquely Japanese flavor. The series will be a worthy addition to the multicultural bookshelf." -Publishers Weekly

"Brimming with the familiar and great themes of loyalty, courage and generosity." -Asahi Evening News

Years ago my oldest son's 1st grade class performed this play, this year my 2nd grader was in the play. Even though they speak in Japanese and English, having the book made the story easy to follow and understand. My kids have done 6 different Japanese folk tale plays over the years and these books are wonderful for the parents to keep up. I have even learned a few hiragana characters. My kids enjoy reading these books over and over again!!!
