Publisher Comments:

The supremely talented Margo Maguire brings us Seducing the Governess—the first in her lush historical series set in Englands colorful Regency Era, featuring the lost heiresses of a powerful duke and their surprising discoveries of fortune, passion, and romance. A thrilling, emotionally rich love story in the vein of Liz Carlyle and Julia London, Seducing the Governess brings a beautiful young lady into the crumbling estate of a tormented, vengeance-seeking earl, forcing him to choose between his duty and his desire.

Synopsis:

A Proper Governess Should Never. . .

Assist a handsome stranger, alone on an unfamiliar road . . . unless the rake happens to be her new employer.

Take a position in a crumbling manor . . . especially if the household staff has been replaced by unruly former soldiers.

Allow her young charge entrée to her heart . . . for once done, it will be impossible to maintain proper distance.

Permit her charge's uncle a breathtaking kiss under a star-lit sky . . . henceforth she will most certainly lose composure whenever he is near.

And above all, she should never, ever fall completely, irreversibly in love with her employer . . . for nothing good can possibly come of it.

Virginia Campbell, December 26, 2011 (view all comments by Virginia Campbell)
"Seducing the Governess" has all the right ingredients for a richly romantic layer cake, but it lacks the extra touch of frosting to hold it all together and make it a true lovers' treat. Margo Maguire offers intriguing characters, a mystery or two, and a definite segue into a sequel. There is a scarred hero, a spirited heroine, and a child in need of loving care. Mercy Franklin, a vicar's daughter, finds herself penniless and without a home after the death of her parents. She accepts a position as governess as Ashby Hall, where nothing is as she expects it to be. Nash Farris, Lord Ashby, inherits his title and properties after the suspicious deaths of this two older brothers. A younger son who planned on a military career, his life is turned upside down with career-ending war wounds and the loss of his brothers. He returns home to a run-down, debt-ridden estate and the responsibility of caring for his orphaned young niece. Sparks immediately fly between Mercy and Nash, and she is unfazed by his scarred visage. Nash finds great enjoyment in bringing out the fire in the plain-dressing and beautiful Mercy, who shows him no mercy when she frequently takes him to task. In order to restore the family estate and fortune and produce a rightful heir, Nash must woo and wed a suitably proper and plush-pursed society miss. However, it is Mercy who captures his interest and imagination and sparks his passion. She is equally smitten with the roguish Nash, and wars with herself and her strict upbringing as she fights an overwhelming attraction to her employer. Revelations about Mercy's true heritage shake her to the core and leave her with many unanswered questions. The more Nash investigates the deaths of both his brothers, the more he doubts those around him. This was a promising story line with interesting lead characters, a definite opposites-attract romance, and more than one element of mystery. Even the richest of layer cakes needs frosting, and a generous touch of chocolate buttercream would have well-served this somewhat lackluster love story. The sequel, "Brazen", features Mercy's twin sister, who has her own romantic adventure to experience and mysteries to solve. I look forward to reading "Brazen" to see if everyone gets their "just desserts"!
