Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Accidental is the dizzyingly entertaining, wickedly humorous story of a mysterious stranger whose sudden appearance during a family's summer holiday transforms four variously unhappy people. Each of the Smarts-parents Eve and Michael, son Magnus, and the youngest, daughter Astrid-encounter Amber in his or her own solipsistic way, but somehow her presence allows them to se their lives (and their life together) in a new light. Smith's exhilarating facility with language, her narrative freedom, and her chromatic wordplay propel the novel to its startling, wonderfully enigmatic conclusion.Ali Smith's acclaimed novel won the prestigious Whitbread Award and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize, the Orange Prize, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

Synopsis:

The Accidental is at once a mysterious story of secret identities and a ruthlessly honest look at the silent cracks that can develop unnoticed in relationships over time. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2005, Whitbread Novel Award 2005 and the Saltire Award 2005. 'Funny, sexy, poignant, bewitching' Observer

Ali Smith gives us interesting characters who are realistic but who collide in not so realistic but always interesting ways.
The book is a most pleasing perplex of word play, reversals, social satire, and archetypal echoes -- with the most amazing
literary equivalent of a traveling shot to capture the history of movies. The novel focuses on a (surprise) dysfunctional upper middle class
British family, the Smarts, on vacation visited by (real surprise) a mysterious stranger, a young self-possessed woman, Amber. Amber up-ends
the life of each member of the Smart household, some for better. Though Amber is at the novel's center, the family's youngest child, the little girl
Astrid, is the book's most interesting and endearing character.
