Castro's Curveballby Tim Wendel
Synopses & Reviews
Trying to salvage one last shot at the major leagues, Billy Bryan is playing winter ball in Cuba. One night, a scraggly-bearded and gangly student protester interrupts the game and takes the mound, changing Billy's life forever. Soon Billy finds himself immersed in a world of behind-the-scenes maneuvering, revolutionary activities, and a passionate romance with a fiery photographer.
It isn't until 1993 that the recently widowed Billy returns with his grown daughter to unravel the mystery of his last season in Cuba. Only then is he able to assess the toll that living out a flawed dream has had on him and that island country and find redemption in his own once-forgotten past.
Recently widowed and now retired, Billy Bryan is "coming to the end of many things." Then a long-forgotten scrapbook stirs memories of a distant past--and beckons him and his grown daughter on a reluctant journey to relive his role in history. In 1947 Billy Bryan is playing winter ball in Cuba, his future as uncertain as the island country. Then one fateful night Bryan witnesses a young student radical named Fidel unleash an amazing curveball. So begins Billy's tug-of-war with destiny. . . .
