Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith's widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to help people with problems in their lives. Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency received two Booker Judges' Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

Synopsis:

Wayward daughters. Missing husbands. Philandering partners. If you've got a problem, and no one else can help you, then pay a visit to Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only female private detective. Her methods may not be conventional, but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side.

Synopsis:

Original detective fiction - with a unique setting (Botswana) and original characters. Now in production as a high-profile feature film by Anthony Mingella and Sydney Pollack. 15,000 copies sold in C format. 300,000 copies sold in the USA.

Very original take on the woman detective. Set in Botswana, this book is as much an homage to Africa, and to humanity as it is great light mystery fare. Great book to read on a plane. Wonderful characters. I am hooked, and plan to read the whole series in order.
