Andrea McNally, July 6, 2011 (view all comments by Andrea McNally)
Margaret Forster, the author of "Lady's Maid", has previously written a biography of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. I surmise from the current book that she developed serious reservations about the poet's character in the process. This is not just another retelling of the famous love story from the maid's perspective. This novel is based on diligent scholarship, a deep understanding of 19th century life below stairs, and a refusal to romanticize the realities of being a servant, even to the reigning literary celebrity couple of their day.
In exploring the complicated relationship between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her lady's maid, Lily Watson, Forster leads the reader to think in new ways about issues of feminism, parenthood, and friendship.
