Already an underground sensation, a high-tech thriller for the wireless age that explores the unthinkable consequences of a computer program running without human controlaa daemonadesigned to dismantle society and bring about a new world order

Technology controls almost everything in our modern-day world, from remote entry on our cars to access to our homes, from the flight controls of our airplanes to the movements of the entire world economy. Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same canat always be said for the people who design them.

Matthew Sobol was a legendary computer game designerathe architect behind half-a-dozen popular online games. His premature death depressed both gamers and his companyas stock price. But Sobolas fans arenat the only ones to note his passing. When his obituary is posted online, a previously dormant daemon activates, initiating a chain of events intended to unravel the fabric of our hyper-efficient, interconnected world. With Sobolas secrets buried along with him, and as new layers of his daemon are unleashed at every turn, itas up to an unlikely alliance to decipher his intricate plans and wrest the world from the grasp of a nameless, faceless enemyaor learn to live in a society in which we are no longer in control. . . .

Computer technology expert Daniel Suarez blends haunting high-tech realism with gripping suspense in an authentic, complex thriller in the tradition of Michael Crichton, Neal Stephenson, and William Gibson.

Computers and thrillers not really my thing; read. But this book is well worth the time. Awesome characters. Starts of a bit bit slow but quickly captures your attention and the readers want to know what's next. Movie is in the works but absolutely everybody should know by now that movies don't always do justice to exceptional novels and books. Just read it break out of your mindset and read something new or different!

A most intensely compelling work of fiction! This techno-thriller is set in the very near future, and explores a world where AI-enhanced machines challenge human dominance, and people rely heavily on augmented reality glasses as part of their daily lives and relations to one another. Extremely well thought out, accurately based on the trajectories of actual technologies and science of today, it falls within the "Hard Sci-Fi" category. Visionary and cautionary tale of the potential good and bad of the expanding role of technology in modern life. Pick it up!

P.A. Brown, January 13, 2011 (view all comments by P.A. Brown)
This is by far the best techno-thriller I have ever read. Suarez gives a new twist on the evil, self-aware computer so overdone in bad books and movies and takes it to a level beyond anything I've seen before. His characters are riveting and you care for them, and cringe with each new horror visited on them. He kept me guessing right up to the end and I relished every dark step he took me down.

That he followed it with an equally exciting conclusion with Freedom TM is just another coup.

Don't miss this book. You won't regret it.
