Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Witty and caustic, Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. In the story of the trials and travails of the youthful Candide, his mentor Dr. Pangloss, and a host of other characters, Voltaire mercilessly satirizes and exposes romance, science, philosophy, religion, and government. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Synopsis:

One of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. Witty, caustic skewering of romance, science, philosophy, religion, government — nearly all human ideals and institutions. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

This book is a satire about optimisim, about how the world is an ugly and unfair place, but that we ought to "tend to our gardens." This book was so ridiculous in its unhappiness that I burst out laughing several times. It isn´t a boring classic, I´d say it´s even more bloody than anything Mel Gibson could put out, but it´s put in an intelligent way. I really liked this book, it´s easy and fun to read, and I rather agree with a great deal of it.
