Publisher Comments:

From acclaimed author Robin McKinley — a mesmerizing novel of supernatural desire...

"Her feet are already bleeding — if you like feet..."

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while.

Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires.

They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion — within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight.

She knows that he is a vampire. She knows that she's to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, when light breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day...

Review:

"Fabulous, fascinating, and a whole lot of fun. Step into Robin McKinley's thrilling, beautifully described world, where you will meet some interesting vampires and a lady who can deal with the creatures of the night." Jayne Ann Krentz

Review:

"I had no idea that blood and dessert could go together so well. I loved it!" Amber Benson, "Tara" on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Review:

"A gripping, funny, page-turning, pretty much perfect work of magical literature that exists more or less at the unlikely crossroads of Chocolat, Interview With the Vampire, Misery, and the tale of Beauty and the Beast." Neil Gaiman, bestselling author of American Gods and creator of The Sandman

Review:

"Most of the charm of this long venture into magic maturation derives from McKinley's keen ear and sensitive atmospherics, deft characterizations and clever juxtapositions of reality and the supernatural..." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"McKinley opens new territory on the vampire range....I can't put her books down while I'm reading them, and...[they] carry me along for a good while after. I hope she writes more about Sunshine and her world..." Grey Walker, Green Man Review

Sunshine is a brilliantly creative novel, and the best paranormal "romance" I've ever read. The book's main character is a normal human woman with faults. She barely graduated from high school, she a simple baker, she begins the story completely average. The vampire is deadly, disturbing, and not alive, yet Ms. McKinley uses that to the story's advantage. He isn't a dashing rake, but a creepy monster.

For the sake of avoiding spoilers, the end of the book and the development of her and the vampire's relationship is one of the most satisfying and believable conclusions. Or if world building is your thing, instead, Ms. McKinley's modern-America-but-not is fascinating to learn about, thanks to skillfully dropped clues and description.

I can only hope she gives us a sequel one day!

Sunshine, the novels titular heroine, is a stream of consciousness narrator who leads the reader on a nonstop page turning adventure. From cockroaches the size of chiuauas to moonlit lakeside mansions, and a vampire much more compelling then Edward any day; Robin Mckinley has written one of her best beauty and the beast variations yet. We all have our comfort reads. books what we turn to again and again and can read from cover to cover with as much pleasure the twentieth time as the very first. and Sunshine is amongst mine.
