Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Herissone (Lancaster U., UK) submits the first study of continuo realization styles in Restoration period sacred music, looking at the characteristics of organ books with music by Purcell, Blow, and Humfrey to see how the books were used and what they reveal about differences between genres and sections, ensemble verses, and solo verse anthems and service settings. She analyzes doubling, figuring, number of voices played, and alteration and addition. In conclusion, she considers the complex accompaniment style in the music of Matthew Locke. The appendix contains the full score of Locke's "How Doth the City Sit Solitary." Some of the chapters were presented as papers at conferences in the UK.
