Murders present meet murders past in P.D. James’s latest harrowing, thought-provoking thriller.

Commander Adam Dalgliesh is already acquainted with the Dupayne--a museum dedicated to the interwar years, with a room celebrating the most notorious murders of that time--when he is called to investigate the killing of one of the family trustees. He soon discovers that the victim was seeking to close the museum against the wishes of the fellow trustees and the Dupayne's devoted staff.  Everyone, it seems, has something to gain from the crime.  When it becomes clear that the murderer has been inspired by the real-life crimes from the murder room--and is preparing to kill again--Dalgliesh knows that to solve this case he has to get into the mind of a ruthless killer.

James has done it again. Who did it? Why close the museum? Who will be next. James' intrepid gumshoe will take you on his most bewildering case yet. Full of twists and turns, false clues and suspects around every corner, it's a great mystery with a surprise ending.

I am an enthusiast for all kinds of literature. Among my favorites are mystery novels. I have long been interested in the California connected mysteries of Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald, and Walter Moseley. However, I started reading some British mysteries a few years back, mostly Agatha Christie, and discovered PD James. Of the books of her's I have read I consider "Murder Room" to be the best and most intellectually stimulating. Ultimately, she is far superior to even the best of the American mystery writers.

This is a really masterful mystery -- it's not for nothing that P.D. James is one of the most highly regarded mystery writers out there. It's interesting to compare this to some of her earlier mysteries; most of the other Adam Dalgliesh mysteries I've read in the past are among the earliest, and while they are great, there's a qualitative difference between this book and the older titles. The characters are more developed and complex; hardly anyone is completely sympathetic or unsympathetic, whereas in some of her older books I often felt that everyone was extremely unlikeable. This is a gripping mystery that had me in a state of tension, not only over who was the murderer, but over who might be the next victim.
